JLHS Offers VITA

By Rocio Montemayor

Juarez-Lincoln High School offered a training for student to provide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) services to the community.

What is VITA?

The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. The training was conducted by business teachers Mrs. Daisy Yudith Cantu and Ms. Nubia Lizette Acosta, who prepared and successfully certified 64 students. Math teacher Ms. Valerie Salinas is currently working on certifying more Juarez-Lincoln High School students.

The IRS- certified volunteers can now provide free basic income tax preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. These certified students can receive community service hours by volunteering at the local income tax center that La Joya ISD will provide for the public all Mondays and Thursdays starting on January 28, 2016 through April 7, 2016, with the exception of February 15, 2016 and spring break. The hours will be from 5:00pm to 7:30pm at Palmview High School.
